Where is Hrunalaug Hot Spring?

 

Located in the southwest of Iceland close to the village of Fludir, Hrunalaug Natural Hot Spring sits on a farm on the eastern edge of the renowned tourist Golden Circle route. 

One of the most accessible geothermal hot springs in Iceland due to its location, Hrunalaug is just 100 kilometers from the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik and 30 kilometers south of one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls, Gullfoss Waterfall.

How to Get to Hrunalaug Natural Hot Spring

 

To reach Hrunalaug Natural Hot Spring from Reykjavík, you’ll need to drive for around 1 hour and 30 minutes on Route 1 (the main Ring Road in Iceland), followed by Route 30. 

If you’re traveling from the famous Thingvellir National Park, arguably the most spectacular national park in Iceland, the drive will take around 45 minutes. You’ll need to take Route 365, then Route 37, 355 and 359.

Hrunalaug Natural Hot Spring Opening Hours

 

  • Spring (15 March to 30 April): 9am to 9pm

  • Summer (1 May to 14 August): 9am to 11pm

  • Fall (15 August to 14 November): 9am to 9pm

  • Winter (15 November to 14 March): 10am to 8pm 

Each visit has a 1 hour and 30 minute time limit to allow as many people to visit the pools as possible.

Other Important Info When Visiting Hrunalaug Hot Spring 

 

  • Changing rooms – There are two huts near the hot springs where you can change clothes. You’ll find hangers and baskets in there, but there aren’t any lockers.

  • Towels – If you need to rent a towel, you can do so at the baths.

  • Refreshments – You can find drinks and sweet treats available for purchase at Hrunalaug Natural Hot Spring.

  • Parking lot and hygiene facilities – Close to Hrunalaug Hot Spring, you’ll find a parking lot and restrooms.

  • Be careful on the rocks – The rocks around the springs can be slippy, so make sure to take extra care when walking here.

  • Check ahead of time – Very occasionally, it’s not possible to bathe at Hrunalaug Hot Springs in the dry season. If this is the case, you can find information on the official Hrunalaug website, so we recommend checking here before heading out on your trip.

  • Respect the environment – Make sure to pick up any litter and bring it with you to preserve the beauty and health of the environment around Hrunalaug.
