Nauthusagil Ravine Canyon

Nestled in the heart of Iceland’s rugged landscape lies a hidden gem awaiting adventurous souls: Nauthusagil Ravine Canyon. Carved by centuries of flowing water, this mesmerizing canyon offers a unique blend of geological wonders, breathtaking vistas and an unparalleled sense of tranquility.

If you’re seeking an unforgettable adventure off the beaten path, look no further than Nauthusagil Ravine Canyon. Let’s explore all you need to know to enjoy an epic day trip to Nauthusagil and its spectacular waterfalls.

Nauthusagil Ravine Canyon

Translating to ‘Bull Shed Ravine’ in English, Nauthusagil Ravine Canyon is a spectacular, hidden canyon surrounded by pretty greenery and cascading waterfalls. The area most likely housed large cattle in the 1900s, which fed on the nearby vegetation and gave the ravine its name.

Nauthusagil’s iconic rowan tree grows all across the canyon, blanketing the rocky wonder in lush green leaves. This epic canyon actually lies underneath the glacial volcano of Eyjafjallajokull, which you may remember from its 2010 eruptions that caused widespread disruption to European air travel.

Nauthusafoss is the name of the waterfall that cascades into Nauthusagil Canyon, with several other famous Icelandic waterfalls very close to the ravine itself.

Where is Nauthusagil Ravine Canyon?

Located in the southern region of Iceland, Nauthusagil Ravine Canyon can be found near the picturesque coastal village of Vik. Situated southwest of the famous Fjallabak Nature Reserve, Nauthusagil Ravine Canyon is very close to both the Thorsmork Nature Reserve, Gljufrabui Waterfall and Seljalandsfoss Waterfall.

How to Get to Nauthusagil Ravine Canyon

If you’re traveling from the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik, it’ll take around 2 hours to reach Nauthusagil Ravine Canyon via the main Ring Road in Iceland (Route 1), followed by a short stretch on Route 49. You’ll also need to drive a short distance on the F249, which is one of Iceland’s unpaved, gravel F-roads. The F249 features several river crossings and, like all of Iceland’s F-roads, requires a 4x4 vehicle to travel on.

From Vik, Nauthusagil Ravine Canyon is around an hour’s drive, also via Route 1 but in the opposite direction (a northerly direction this time), followed by the 49 and F249.
